THE REPUBLICANS IN THE SENATE DIDN’T DISAPPOINT!…STRIKE ONE!

April 17, 2010

Senator McChinless(R-KY)

In my blog dated April 13, 2010,”Obama and the Democrats Need to Keep up the Pressure on the Republicans”, I pointed out strike two as the Republican party opposing the Democrats on Wall Street reform. Well there coming through for me, as expected! Yesterday under the not so able leadership of Senator Mitch McChinless(R-KY), they voted in unanimity 41 to 0 to oppose a proposed Wall Street Reform Bill. Two very salient points here; 1) The American people know it was Wall Street greed and unregulated mis-management that almost took the whole world down two years ago. For the Republicans to oppose reform and regulation of those greedy institutions is like them committing political suicide! 2) Soon after the Republicans announced their unified opposition to cleaning up Wall Street, the SEC filed suit in federal court against Goldman Sachs for committing fraud in the world of phony mortgages. Apparently they knowingly back the writing of bad mortgages while at the same time bet and won they would fail! I don’t understand the financial details, but suffice it to say, they bet Americans would choke on the bad loans and Goldman-Sachs would reap huge profits.

Nice timing Republicans! Your love affair with Frank Luntz and his poor advice is costing you huge! Your lack of vision is only eclipsed by your political stupidity! I can’t wait for your second strike, will it be your opposition to the START II treaties or will be it be clumsy fumble-fucking of the approval process for a new Justice for the SCOTUS. Either way, they will both be nails in your coffin!

My rage for Monday’s commentary is growing! Thanks for the weekend read, and please send your comments.

NOTICE FOR MONDAY-THE GLOVES ARE COMING OFF!

April 16, 2010

Number One Knuckle-Dragger

I am so outraged by the extreme right in this country, I can’t take it anymore! Listening to Joe Soucharay’s show yesterday was the straw that broke the camel’s back. He panders to the knuckle-dragging, inbred, worst of the white uneducated trash there is. His so-called “garage-logic” is a code term for ignorance and stupidity. He endorses wasting natural resources as a way to “get back” at the citizens of “Euphoria”, alias, liberals. The stupid ignorant fools simply eat this mindless shit up! Anyway, look forward to Monday, I’m thoroughly pissed off and you’ll get to read my reasons why! Thank you.

READERS TIME TO CONTRIBUTE!

April 15, 2010

Big John

Youandmedoweagree blog is taking today and tomorrow off. The commentaries will pick up again on Monday, April 19. As the readers of this blog, I’m asking you over the next few days to review past blogs and either respond with questions, comments, or most importantly, topics to write on in the next few weeks.

The political scene has become pretty predictable of late. The subservient Republican politicians continue to obstruct, the Tea-Baggers continue to lie and fear-monger, the candidates for Minnesota Governor continue being boring and bland, no passion, and Michele Bachmann has now proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that she is mentally unable to continue serving in Congress.

The sports scene is really good right now. The Masters is done, Tiger is back, and Elin is going to dump him. That will be the best thing for him, anyway. At least he’ll be able to work the “other tour” while golfing without having to feel guilty. The Twins are great, new season, new stadium, etc. The Gopher athletic programs are still in the tank. The Wolves just ended a horrible season. The Irondale High School baseball team is now rated number 7! Go Knights!

Lawn and yard care season are upon us. If you have questions regarding this, let me know. Hopefully my business website will be up soon, http://www.backyardtransformationsmn.com and you will be able to connect to it for landscape help. In the meantime, if you would like an estimate for landscape work, please call me at 612-747-5575. My schedule is filling in fast!! 🙂 !

I look forward, as always to hearing from you all, and thank you very much for your continued support of my commentaries.

MY PERSONAL QUANDARY WITH MN GUBERNATORIAL CHOICE!

April 14, 2010

Reversing the damage T-Paw did to MN

Unless I’ve missed something, I don’t think former great Minnesota governors Arne Carlson and Wendell Anderson have endorsed a candidate yet for this years gubernatorial race. I would value their opinions on this important state election. Yesterday, Walter Mondale endorsed Margaret Anderson Kelliher and a couple of weeks ago Howard Dean hopped on RT Rybak’s bus. Walter Mondale is arguably the patriarch of American progressivism. His vision has always been based on common sense values, mostly what he feels is best for the American people. Jimmy Carter, though I love him and respect the hell out of him, has maybe gone too far left on some issues which lead me to wonder if he’s losing touch. I will always say, however, in my mind Carter is the greatest ex-President the country has ever had. Howard Dean is my contemporary hero of the progressive movement. I wish the DNC would make him the leader, we need him at the controls again.

I’m waiting to hear what Arne Carlson and Wendy Anderson have to say. I hate to say it, but I am studying the great progressive politicians to see what they are saying. The reason? Because I am not blown away by the power of any of the present candidates in the race. I don’t feel a real passion from any of them regarding the rape of the state over the past eight years by Governor Pawlenty. As a Minnesotan, I am furious over what this Governor has done to us. Nobody stands him up! Nobody will explain to the voters just how bad a job Helmut Head did. I don’t mean in a professorial, dry explanation of how T-Paw cut so many needed programs for the disadvantaged, cut income tax for the wealthy folks, emptied the state coffers, and placed the burden on local governments to pay their own way. It’s been plainly obvious, especially over the past few years, he has been positioning himself with the national wing-nuts for a Presidential run in 2012. Fortunately for the country, Tim of Eagan has hitched his cart to the wrong horse, the wackos of the Tea-Bagger party. The group is already going down the tubes! The people of our state and of the country are getting blasted with the high volume screaming from the right. That screaming, they call it passion, gets peoples attention. That’s why teaching the evils of Pawlenty won’t work. I want fire. I want passion. This doesn’t have to be by screeching and screaming, but by the hard direct presentation of the facts.

We need to nominate a candidate that can deliver the message of positive movement. The worst thing Pawlenty has done to this state is cutting the revenues that are needed to operate a government. The state is broke because of his posturing for the attention of the national right-leaning Republican party. He can claim he cut taxes, but he won’t claim at what expense. Our new state leader must bring a sane operational program for the state. Our taxes must be raised, the state is short of revenue. The plan to cut taxes to expand the economy has proven to be the biggest lie ever laid on the American public. Tax cuts for the wealthy only mean more to their bottom lines from tax savings. They don’t plow it back into their businesses and hire more people. Corporate and company owners view employees as a “necessary evil” to operate. They all hope for modernization and technology so they can replace people with machines. Who are the Republicans kidding. The more America kowtows to corporate giants the more broke we become as a nation, financially and morally.

I want my candidate to make these points because they are the truth. They need to made with some hard language and fist-pounding. The ideal candidate will get Minnesotans to understand these facts and get on board with them.

Lastly, a shameful situation has developed in Minnesota. The vast disparity in public education regarding the “haves” and the “have-nots”, is embarrassing at best and morally wrong at worst. I am connected with most of the candidates via e-mail and Facebook. I really am pleading to the candidates to reveal to me and the whole state, exactly what are their proposals to end this shameful situation. I may be a very progressive liberal, but when it comes to educating the most important resource a state and country have, our kids, I am very hard-line conservative. This is our top resource being ignored and I’m very angry about that. The Governor has the position and power to do something about this. I do believe strong dress and conduct codes need to be incorporated into all public schools. I believe all public schools should require the wearing of uniforms for the children. It takes the financial pressure off the lower-income parents to buy expensive shoes and clothes for their kids and it contributes to discipline and school spirit. I doubt I’d get many progressives to side with me on these points, but I believe strongly in them. Thanks for your read today and I look forward to reading your comments, especially from the candidates themselves or those representing them.

Go Twins,

OBAMA AND DEMOCRATS NEED TO KEEP UP THE PRESSURE ON THE REPUBLICANS

April 13, 2010

The President is about to embark on an extremely critical period in his administration. He has before him three very important events that can be great for America and the world and potentially break the political back of the Republicans.

As part of his declaration of a year ago to significantly reduce the stockpile of nuclear weapons within four years, he has started by working with Russia on the signing of the new START, Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, that will reduce the number of nuclear tipped ICBM’s etc. by around 50%! Some of the former members of the old USSR, have voluntarily purged what nuclear weapons they have and weapons grade plutonium. These are incredible gains for the safety and peace in the world. The more of these things the U.S. can control, the more secure they will be. There is a black market around the globe that can front these weapons or weapon fuel to the “wrong” people,i.e. terrorists! There really is no downside for America with the signing of the START II treaty but, there are Republican lawmakers making noise about opposing it. Again, there really is no downside for the U.S. to be tied to this treaty. Strike one, Republicans!

The next important piece of legislation to come to Congress will be to pass a financial industry reform bill. That industry has proven time and again it cannot be trusted to govern itself by its own rules and regulations. Since deregulation of the industry and Wall Street, the doors of greed were flung wide open. The big bankers were gambling with our money, and losing! But along the way, they were rewarding themselves with huge profits, salaries, and bonuses. All with our money! We were getting screwed and they were taking the difference. The time for tough regulation is upon us. This industry was instrumental in the global economic collapse of 2008 and 2009. They need to be reined in by intelligently worded regulations that will close off all loop holes. These people are so greedy, they will pay millions to find loop holes to exploit. They also continue to pay millions to lobby Congress for legislation in their favor. An integral part of this new regulation has to be a clamp down on lobbying. Like their corrupt brethren in the financial industry, a lot of the members of Congress are driven by greed and therefore they don’t repel the lobbyist’s advances. We know there is a major part of the Republican party in very beholden to the financial industry. These are be the guys that will fight passing tough regulations. The Americans will see this as a move by their representatives to stay on the trough of Wall Street. A very dangerous move by these politicians. If the Tea-Baggers are smart, they will call out these friends of Wall Street. If the Republican members question or fight the proposed legislation to regulate the industry, they will be savaged by the Democrats and independents. Strike Two.

With the retirement of Justice John Paul Stevens, a moderate and an accurate interpreter of the Constitution, the President will again be called on to appoint a new Justice. This time, I think he needs to forget about getting cooperation from the Republicans in the Senate. As we’ve all discovered, they don’t like the President, they will not acknowledge he is the President, and they will not work with the President. They will do they’re usual uninformed screaming about not wanting an “activist” judge. They say they want an unbiased interpreter of the Constitution. Well, let’s look at the most “activist court” in the history of the country. Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Scalia, and Kennedy, all Republican President nominees have reversed previous rulings, they have re-written laws passed by Congress, and all on their own gave corporations 1st Amendment status as individuals, allowing them to buy candidates, political seats, and elections. The ruling does not even make a differentiation between domestic owned and foreign-owned corporations! And the Republicans say they don’t want “activist” judges! The present SCOTUS could ultimately destroy American democracy, but they don’t want “activist” judges. President Obama and the democrats need to ram this down the throats of McChinless and the rest of them. If the President makes the proper case for his appointment and draws the comparisons to what the Republicans have given us already with the most radical activist court in history, he will prevail. That will be strike three, and they’re out!

The Republicans are digging their own grave for the mid-terms and 2012. This obstructionist posturing is already backfiring on them at home. They are doing nothing, and their constituents are getting fed up with it. With the truth being exposed about the SCOTUS, there will be a negative response from the voters as well. I really hope the President could find a well-qualified candidate for Justice nomination who is a black latina, gay, confined to a wheelchair, and has a great resume of defending civil rights causes! What a perfect Justice for the Supreme Court. Oh, I almost forgot, this disabled, black latina, lesbian must also be an atheist. The present court is comprised only of Catholics and Jews.

Bring on the fight Tea-Baggers, you are a whiney minority led by a screeching quitter that is already coming apart. For the subservient Republican office holders, keep hanging onto Rush, Sean, Glenn, etc. and see how far you get. I’m looking forward to November 2, 2010. Not just because it’s my birthday! By the way, I was born mid-term election night 1954. Two great Americans and Minnesotans were elected to office that night. Orville Freeman as our Governor and Hubert Humphrey to the U.S. Senate. Hooray for me, I’ll claim responsibility. Anyway, thanks for your read today and, as always, I look forward to your comments.

THE PERFECTION OF THE MASTERS, AGAIN!

April 12, 2010

The King

Phil “Lefty” Mickelson’s winning of his third green jacket yesterday was, once again, the icing on the cake for another spectacular Masters Golf Tournament! While watching the television coverage all week from Augusta, you get the idea this is something that is really special. For many years, a ticket to the Masters has been the toughest sporting event ticket to acquire in the world. I count myself as one of the lucky ones that has attended the Masters. I can’t remember the exact year, ’74 or ’75, the year Lee Elder qualified as the first black golfer to compete in the tournament. I followed Elder for several holes mostly out of respect for him and the fact that he was a “home boy” of mine from Washington D.C. Being a “Yankee” from Minnesota, I was shocked by some of the comments easily heard throughout the gallery. I thought I was back in the Antebellum South. But I’d heard it all anyway since I was in school a piece up the road to the east at the University of South Carolina.

Augusta National Golf Club is quite possibly the single most beautiful real estate in the world. I have never seen a golf course so perfectly manicured in my life. I could not even find a bad lie in the rough! The gardeners and landscapers over the years have maintained a beautiful mix of nature, with the tall pines and wandering old oaks, and the breathtaking sights of azaleas, magnolias, redbuds, etc. in their full splendor! Flower gardens abound. Bobby Jones, possibly the greatest amateur golfer of all time found this property and developed into today’s most beautiful golf course in the world. If you’ve heard about the goose bumps one grows when walking up Magnolia Lane toward the club, it is true. Although I was only about twenty at the time I was there, it’s a humbling experience. I had the goose bumps. This, I believe, is a life-long memory. The only other time in my life that I experienced this was being in the Metrodome for a Twins game against the hated Brewers from across the border in August of 1987. The dome was full, over 60,000 in attendance, pre-curtain era, ands the Twins were driving to a pennant. Unbelievable! One difference, Augusta National is humbling for avid golf fans and the Dome was a plastic piece of junk!

While attending Carolina, one of my best friends from high school, Randy Connor, went to the University of Georgia. We used to go back and forth to party at each others schools. Both schools had great reputations as pro level party schools. One thing I noticed, however, was the beauty of the girls in Athens. The prettiest in the country, and I have been to many colleges around the U.S., so I know of what I speak. I’m also showing my advancing age, we used to call the girls “hot”, now we say they are “pretty”. Well, the only place on the planet where you’ll find prettier girls is at the Masters. As you walk around Augusta National you are so dazzled by the surroundings, and especially as a twenty year old, I was blown away by the hundreds of “hotties” bopping around the hallowed grounds! I’ll keep this G-rated so I won’t go into more of the details!

This year’s Masters was really a typical Masters story. These players put so much pressure on themselves to perform well here and every year there are so many stories of the on-course melt-downs and blow ups. The course is set up to be very tough, and when a player has a bad hole, it can change his psyche so much he may be done for the day. When this happens, it quickly takes him out of contention or missing the cut after Friday’s round. To do well here it takes a mental toughness that no other sport can claim to need to be victorious. Very seldom does a guy “break out” and win the Masters. The Europeans do well here because they play a tougher tour in Europe. They grew up playing in harsher conditions and they are better in general at match-play. Being a solid match-play player is very helpful to being successful at the Masters. A player has huge pressure on them with every shot in match-play, similar to pressure of the Masters.

The most successful guys in the Masters have been Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tiger Woods. Jack has focus like no other golfer in the game until Tiger came around. Tiger’s focus, combined with his mental toughness and physical ability, will make him eventually the greatest golfer ever. I love this kid’s game. Like nobody else since Arnie in his prime, Tiger can “will” his way to victory. Arnold Palmer is most responsible for the modern-day popularity of golf. His game was never what one would call “technically right”. That famous short fast back swing and the flailing feet were his trademark. But Arnie could sense the kill! He’d hitch up his trousers, take some drags off the cigarette, and start the “charge to victory” with his loyal “Arnie’s Army” in tow. Arnie was great because of his mental toughness and competitive drive. Arnie was an on-course “swash-buckler”. When charging, he took some ill-advised daring shots, sometimes it didn’t work. Reminds me of the modern-day golfing “swash-buckler”, none other than Phil Mickelson. Unlike Arnold, Lefty swings from the wrong side of the ball but, like Arnold, Phil will take chances. Phil has a beautiful golf swing, much unlike Arnold. Here is a typical Phil scenario from yesterday. He was in the pine straw under some trees on number 15, a par 5, most players would have laid up because of the trees and Rays Creek flowing in front of the green. In play, this hole is an easy reach in 2 for big hitters like Phil, if their tee ball is on the fairway. Well, Phil fired off of the straw, split two pines and stuck the ball about eight feet to the right of the flag! Vintage Mickelson! Phil played the course great, his game works here and I believe he will many more green jackets, he might even win more than Jack’s six. I think Tiger will win more as well. His game, his toughness, his focus, his competitive fire, and his will to win will carry him there. Also, Tiger has a true understanding, appreciation, and respect for the history of the Masters and golf in general that few of his peers have. That in itself, drives Tiger past most of the regular tour guys.

A final thought on the Masters. It celebrates the game perhaps more than any other major tournament. The tournament was started by the great Bobby Jones, an amateur. The Masters every year invites the top amateurs from around the world to play with the pros in the toughest golf competition on tour. This year’s low amateur is 16 year-old Matteo Manassero from Italy. What an incredible kid! Only 16 and he makes the cut at Augusta! This is what dreams are made of. Good for you Matteo, and good luck this year on the European Tour. He is turning pro in three weeks! A new Sergio!

I really love the sport of golf. The Masters is the top of the golf mountain. I’m revved up now for my renewed playing interest in the game. Thanks for today’s read, and I’ll see you on the first tee!

PUBLIC EDUCATION DISPARITIES IN MINNESOTA

April 9, 2010

As a married white parent living in the suburbs of the Twin Cities, I am quite comfortable with the education my kids had and are getting in school. They have been offered quality education choices from kindergarten to graduation. Our district, Mounds View, happens to be one of the highest quality academic districts in the state. Our high school, Irondale, is rated as one of the top academic public high schools in the country. A few years back, only Orono and Irondale made U.S. News & World Report’s top 50 public high schools in the country from Minnesota. Irondale seems to have embraced technology, science and math. Areas of education that the U.S. is falling behind the rest of the top developed countries in the world. So, with Irondale on the west side of the district and the cake-eaters on the east side attending Mounds View High School, we have perhaps the top academic performing secondary schools in the state! No wonder I’m comfortable living here.

With graduation rates amongst the highest in the U.S. and college board scores the top in the country, where’s the problem? These statistics are so impressive because of the grad rates and scores of the overwhelming majority of white and non-African-American and Latino students. Though Minnesota is number one in grad rates and board scores, Minnesota also has the widest disparity of these statistics between whites and minorities. I can only surmise it’s about the money trail and where it leads, and the socio-economic disparities throughout the state and metro area. I really don’t know the answer, I’m by no means an expert. This is where I’m looking for one of the remaining candidates for Governor to tell me the best way to handle this very lopsided situation. We all know that Governor Pawlenty, though claiming to not cut funding for education, he has. So, we know his hands-off approach to education didn’t work.

“No child left behind” was and is a failure! It put way too much emphasis on individual teachers’ performance. The teachers’ performance was graded by the passing rate of their students on some tests. A very narrow criterium to determine the success or failure of a program. The teachers were teaching kids how to take tests to save their own jobs! You get the point. President Obama’s “Race to the Top” program was a little better conceived, it rewards districts for excellence, by way measurable improvement. By qualifying, a district would receive extra funding from the federal government. The conception of both programs was right. Two administrations see a problem with our education system and tried a start to fix it. I believe it’s up to the state, not the federal government, to administrate and operate it’s schools by standards that each individual state controls. The state should also fund the education system, with federal dollars to support it. But, the states should determine how to use the federal dollars, not the federal government. Again, a plea from me to all of the remaining candidates for governor. We need leadership in education, not followers!

Again, I don’t have the answers. I’m looking for a candidate to show me the way. We have kids from poor areas of the Twin Cities, poorer people in remote rural areas, and the usually ignored kids from the Native American tribes. As these kids age, they all keep falling behind. We need help for these kids, quickly. A suggestion of common sense would be to require parents of these children to get involved in their kids lives and education. Common sense, right? Maybe a required meeting once a month with the school personnel to monitor their child’s progress. Again, I don’t know how to fix it, but I do know I’m deeply ashamed of the present system that allows these kids to continue failing. This is Minnesota! State where Governor Wendy Anderson in the seventies passed the “Minnesota Miracle” for our state’s education system. Now, apparently it’s no longer a miracle. There are too many kids failing to get the education they deserve.

I supported Steve Kelly early on for Governor. Why? I liked his progressive forward thinking about education. He laid out a plan that seems to make sense. Too bad he bowed out. Now I’m looking for a candidate to step up and dazzle me with a plan that’s going to help get these underprivileged kids on an educational par with the well-off suburban white students. I want to hear about social programs that will help the family unit that will work hand-in-hand with education. I’m all ears candidates! Please let me know which one of you be dedicated to educational excellence and equality.

I can tell I’m writing on educational matters, I just ran the spell and grammar check and only needed four corrections. Hooray for me! Thank you very much for your read today and have a great weekend. Oh, the Twins took three out of four in Anaheim!

LYING AND FEAR-MONGERING ARE CHANGING THE VERY FABRIC OF AMERICA

April 8, 2010

Paul

For countless generations America has been a shining beacon of hard work, self-reliance, care for the disadvantaged, and optimism. Taking a brief look at the high and/or low points of American history proves this. A tremendous hurdle the country cleared was the devastating Civil War. Hundreds of thousands of Americans lost their lives to fellow Americans. This was a war to separate America into two countries! It doesn’t get any worse for a country to be divided by civil war, and yet, America got past it, mended the fences, and started on the way to being the leading nation-state in the world. You almost can’t describe what a huge accomplishment that was. Fast forward to the end of the 19th century and the Spanish-American War. The U.S. was attacked and overcame an aggressor from the South. Again, the U.S. prevailed, a lasting alliance was formed with Mexico and we are now peaceful neighbors, drug and human smuggling not withstanding. Twenty some years later the U.S. was drawn into World War I, the war to end all wars! Millions of people lost their lives in Europe, Americans, their allies, and the German enemy. America weathered that storm and took off again as the world leader. By 1930, America, and the world became entrenched in the greatest economic downturn in human history, the Great Depression. With unemployment in the U.S. going as high as 30 some per cent, it was really bad. People relied on standing in soup lines for food, suicides were at record highs and the country was suffering through its darkest times ever. But, with the great optimism and leadership of FDR, we overcame and once again returned to world leadership. Just as the country recovered from the Great Depression, we entered the fight in World War II, the big one. It was a tough war, fighting the Germans in Europe and Africa, and the Japanese in the Pacific. Again, America prevailed and grew ever stronger. The country was more united, more optimistic about the future than at any time in history. As the U.S. was drawn into the Korean Conflict, we faced a serious challenge again. Thank goodness Give ’em hell, Harry Truman was our President at the time. He over-ruled our military leaders and avoided a major catastrophic war with Communist China. The U.S. then enjoyed some peaceful years in the fifties under the bland leadership of DDE. President Eisenhower did however look to the future and warn of an overgrown military-industrial complex. A very wise vision coming from a life-long military guy! Ike did, however, make the poor decision to send military advisors to Vietnam. Enter the decade of the 1960’s. This was a very destructive time in the country’s history. The country was ravaged by civil disobedience which was violent at times, including riots across the country. Between the anti-war movement and the civil rights movement, President Johnson presided over the most difficult times, domestically, since the Civil War. The country moved past that and flourished once again. The United States then went through recession I under Presidents Carter and Reagan and by the decade of the 1990’s, the country not only pulled out of the recession, but flourished. Under the great optimistic leadership of President Clinton, the country enjoyed the greatest economic expansion in its history. He entered office in 1992 with the debt and deficits still lingering from the Reagan economic debacle of the early eighties and left in 2000 with the largest surplus in the history of the country. Bush I had Dessert Storm to pay for, but, again, America moved forward. Bush II brought us into two wars. We are finally pulling out of Iraq and are left with a growing quagmire in Afghanistan. But if history is an indicator, America will move past these last two military occupations and move on and up. Bush II left the country in total economic ruins. He brought us into two wars, sponsored three massive tax cuts, and signed a medical prescription aid bill that cost around 700 billion dollars. None of these actions were paid for, all of them were just thrown at the deficit! Sounds more like the Reagan instant gratification economy with the “future be damned”! Bush II came into office with a budget surplus of about 200 billion dollars, and left eight years later with a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit. That’s a swing of 1.5 trillion dollars! Unlike the past, the country is having a little difficulty moving past this problem.

What’s different today? In a brief year and a half, the country has gone from its usual unbridled enthusiasm and optimism with the election of Barrack Obama as President to the current state of doubt being cast by the doomsayers from the right. America loved his optimistic vision for America. The country had just gone through eight years of the darkest leadership perhaps in its history, under Dick Cheeney. It has now been documented just how rotten to the core this man is. When a hard-working self-reliant nation like America is led by the Prince of Evil, it eventually just wore us down. The lies, the half-truths, and the exaggerations of the truth came to roost.

That opened the door for Fox News and Rush Limbaugh to seize the time and leadership of the opposition. Because the leadership these entities use is based on hate and fear-mongering to whip up their followers, the venom is pointed right at the current leadership of the country, even though it is not the current leadership’s responsibility for the vast majority of the country’s economic woes. The leadership of the new right uses threats of socialism, fascism, racial slurs, national bankrupcy, and an ill-conceived national security plans that will lead to “muslim terrorists” to easily enter our country to rape, rob, pillage and destroy. The troubling thing is, they have a lot of less enlightened people in the country believing this bullshit. Fortunately, they are in the minority, by a long way. But, the fact is, they are there, and they have the attention of the media. The national tea-bagger movement tends to be even more extreme. The negativity emanating from this crowd is so bad, I can’t figure out why the media gives them any coverage. A very good friend of mine sent me an e-mail with an article portraying the majority of the tea-bagger nation as being “regular Americans” with real concerns about our economy. My issue is this, they are guilty by association and complacency of accepting these racist thugs into their group. If they were so pious and America loving, they would have zero tolerance for this non-sense.

America needs to get back to being led by optimists. People with positive visions of our nation’s future. We need leaders with solutions, not seek and destroy tactics. Our country and states, Minnesota for instance, needs positive leadership. Where are the Hubert Humphrey’s, the Walter Mondale’s, the Wendell Anderson’s, and the Paul Wellstone’s of the country? Leaders by positive caring examples. I was reminded the other day of Governor Anderson’s “Minnesota Miracle” of excellence in education using a prudent funding method that actually reduced property taxes. Well, our current Governor has blown that all to pieces. He, Tim Pawlenty, is a big backer of Michele Bachmann and mindless Fox News celebrity, Sarah Palin. What does that tell you about the leader of our state?

Avoid these “nattering nabobs of negativity”. The leadership of the right has gotten so bad about lying, almost all have fact-checkers following them to clarify the plethora of lyes and half-truths they spread. Please, read, study, research, and understand the issues on your own. It’s obvious by listening to them, the Republican leadership and their subservient office holders do not do it themselves, otherwise they would not be spreading the falsehoods they do. Thank you.

MICHELE BACHMANN-A PARODY OF HERSELF!

April 7, 2010

On the day fellow tea-bag leader Sarah the Quitter Palin comes to Minneapolis to perform another one of her screaming shrill speeches about how everything is wrong in America, I thought a review of Minnesota’s biggest embarrassment would be appropriate. First, I’ll note a couple ironies regarding her race to keep her seat. She has spent so little time in her own district these past few months because she’s been on a nationwide self-promotion campaign. Her constituents are starting to feel left out. When her campaign scheduled Target Center for her Tea-Baggers Ball with the shrieking Palin, the Congressman, Keith Ellison, who serves Minneapolis requested, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, that the lying naysayers and spreaders of doom not bring that stuff to his district. You see, Bachmann is not hosting her rally within her district, but outside of her district. I’ve also noticed the tea-bagger congregation is a very sad and humorless group. When I suggested yesterday that Congressman Ellison get the cops to block the entry to Target Center for this crap, again, very tongue-in-cheek, I was told I would be violating their 1st amendment rights. Hello, sarcasm!

The tea bag movement really has become America’s new “nattering nabobs of negativity”, they can only complain, tear down, cheer-lead violence upon their opponents, fear-monger, and lie. They have never even attempted to offer constructive ideas for change. They bitch non-stop like babies but can’t ever offer solutions to what they perceive as problems. They complain about the size and expansion of the federal government, but in modern times it’s the Democratic presidents that reduce the bureaucracy and the Republicans that grow it. Under Bush II, the federal government had unprecedented growth in size as well as debt and deficit growth. Do these extreme right-wingers ever study the facts? In a factual bar graph chart, the month-to-month growth of unemployment starting in 2007 to the present shows under Bush a free fall of job loss, while under Obama, a stunning reversal of that trend. Thank you stimulus package. Again, do the righties ever refer to facts? Anyway, I digress.

Michele Bachmann, as covered by a great op-ed in the Minneapolis Star Tribune today written by Paul Scott, is shown as a small outrageous flame-thrower from her hole out of the far right fringe. She has a documented history of lying and exaggerating the truth to egg on her nit-wit following. Oops, there I go again, name-calling. Come on, what else can they be called but nit-wits? Everything sensational lie Bachmann tells gets eaten up by these tea-baggers as gospel. When she gets called out on a lie, she retreats for a while, but then the attention on her fades, so she revives and adds more sensational lies to recapture the spotlight. A very interesting case study could be done on Michele Bachmann about her obvious personal insecurities that drive her to make these outrageous statements. One could almost feel sorry for her except for that fact she is a mean cold-hearted bitch that never sides with the poor and disadvantaged, never sides with working-class America, but only sides with Wall Street, the corrupt banking and finance industry, the legalized rapists of the insurance industry, the NRA, and the American Chamber of Commerce. Does this look like the resume of a Congressperson that gives a rip about the American people or her own constituency? Hell no! It’s the resume of a sick deranged self-absorbed ego-maniac that’s out of control. Her actions, behavior, and words have brought unrepairable shame to the state of Minnesota. From the start of her political career to the unforeseeable future, we will be known as the state that produced Michele Bachmann. It’s like Wisconsin still trying to shed their heritage of spawning the likes of Joseph McCarthy, Ed Gein, and Jeffrey Dahmer!

My advice to America is to give President Obama a chance. He has finally grasped the power he has and he will keep moving the country in the right direction. Those that believe the country is headed toward a socialist-democracy obviously have no faith in our country and our core values. Our footing as a free capitalist democracy is too firm, will never be shaken loose. All indicators, economic and otherwise, show the country moving in the right direction. Please do not get sucked in by the doomsayers, Palin, Bachmann, and the like. They lie to get people angry about our country with no facts to support their positions, they offer no ideas of how to fix their perceived problems, and they campaign on anger and hatred. This, if unchecked, will be bad for our country. We need to get back to fact based planning and a general feeling of optimism combined with the American “can-do” attitude. Stop listening to the haters and start paying closer attention to the facts and what you believe could be helpful in the comeback of a healthy America. Please start by reading David Brooks’ op-ed in yesterdays NY Times. It’s all about looking forward to a bright future for America, with many salient points to support his theory. By the way, Brooks is by no means a bleeding heart lefty. He’s more a “centrist” politically. He is not considered a tight ally of the current White House.

So, as we get bombarded by all the negative screeching emanating from Target Center later today, remember there are very few facts and certainly less truth about reality coming from this crowd. I’ve given you things to listen for, then you can check for yourself. As I say all the time, read, study, research, and understand the issues on your own. Do not be swayed by the media and certainly not a group of doomsaying liars. Even Senator Tom Coburn(R-OK), commented the other day in a town hall gathering in Oklahoma City, that citizens should not listen to the news from Fox News Network because they manipulate the facts to work for them and their ideology! Yippee, a potential breakthrough on the right! A Republican Senator that would actually like to explore the worlds of facts and truths! We’ll see how long this lasts for him before he gets “Frummed” from the party by the tea-baggers. Thanks for todays read, and again I welcome your comments.

NOW, CAN PRESIDENT OBAMA HANDLE ANOTHER CHALLENGE?…

April 6, 2010

Karzai with his buddy Bush II

…With Hamid Karzai making some really stupid noise in Afghanistan, can President Obama handle this flare-up? Karzai, yet another failed example of American nation building around the globe, was propped up by the Bush II administration. His true colors are coming forth now, those of corruption and cronyism. His own brother is a tribal leader, a runner and provider of poppies for production of heroin to fuel the world demand. This is the same background of Karzai himself. Once a thug, always a thug.

What was once a “noble war” to root out the international leaders of al Qaeda, has become a Vietnam-like quagmire. The U.S. seems to have been trying to keep this hoodlum in power, just like we did with Diem in Vietnam. As happened in Vietnam, there are no measurable positive results for our military efforts in Afghanistan. We have, virtually eliminated al Qaeda from Afghanistan, and are now using our 100,000 troops to keep stability in the country. For what? The people of Afghanistan do not want our military presence. The corrupt President Karzai is calling on the U.S. to stop demanding he clean up his act and house. Karzai, via the use of U.S. backing and of thug tactics in his country, was able to get “legitimately elected” in the recent elections. I believe, this was a total sham, and a huge slap in the proverbial American face.

In observing the behavior of Karzai and the general anti-American feeling of the population, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what the end result will be. It’s really only a matter of when, not if. The Afghanis obviously prefer their pre-historic system of governance, a country divided and united by a series of tribal lordships. It’s land with no real natural resources of value to the outside world, it has very difficult terrain and topography making it difficult to control centrally, so why does Obama and the U.S. continue kicking a dead horse? The American military has apparently convinced the President that Afghanistan is a strategic ally that can not fall. Firstly, Afghanistan is a free and sovereign country, we have no business being there. They have never been a threat to the U.S. The trumped-up scare of the Taliban is just that! The Taliban has no interest in expanding beyond the borders of Afghanistan. They are an ally of al Qaeda. They will host al Qaeda operations. But, if not Afghanistan, al Qaeda will be in any number of places around the planet, including right here in the good ol’ U.S. of A. This Afghan problem needs to be dealt with quickly and decisively. Our continued presence in Afghanistan will produce no positive results. It’s time to cut bait and move on before it becomes another Vietnam.

Now it’s time for President Obama to exercise his new-found “leadership legs”. Remember, he needs to lead the country through economic rebuilding and financial industry reform and regulation. These are to be his priorities. He must now utilize Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to take on the Afghan/Karzai problem. With Clinton, the President has the most active and intelligent Secretary of State since the days of Dean Rusk under LBJ and Henry Kissinger under Nixon. Clinton, in combination with Vice President Biden and the assistance of Secretary of Defense Gates can get this done. Biden had Karzai figured out long ago. He has even walked out of meetings with Karzai because Biden couldn’t deal with such a crook in clear conscience.

A decisive resolution to the Afghani problem and our occupation needs to happen. Once right-wing America wakes up to the idea there is no way to military victory, and even if it were possible, why?, Afghanistan is a pre-historic way of life that has no interest in the modern world. If Clinton, Gates, and Biden can get a resolution quickly, that will save the country billions of dollars, save hundreds to thousands lives, and Obama will be the hero. It’s time Mr. President. It’s time to end this occupation of a sovereign state and let them return to what they had. You can be a hero, or you can go down in flames with Afghanistan. Make the right choice, soon. Thanks your read today and, as always, I look forward to reading your comments.
